How do you inspire kids to try a variety of foods they wouldn’t normally touch?

How do you give kids a language that they can use to express themselves around food and introduce them to different cooking methods? How do you help families to become adventurous eaters through their children? How can kids find joy in learning through food?

 

Leah Roland has been described as the “Chef for Kids”. She has a knack for turning on kids “food lights” and transforming their enthusiasm for food into kitchen creations. Perhaps her ability to talk a language that kids can understand is due to her own experience of cooking for her family from the age of 12 years; and from the age of 15 years writing up shopping lists during school time and planning the family dinner menu for the week. Now a parent of three girls she knows very well the challenges parents face.

 

Leah Roland has taught kids cooking in schools to more than 5000 children over a period of 6 years. This journey started when she began organizing cooking classes at the local primary school in Bangalow. In 2008, with funding from the Federal Government, Leah became Project Director for the Growing Healthy Schools project. This project culminated in her providing training to teachers and parents in 10 local schools in how to set up kitchen gardens, healthy eating programs, and to run “Kids in the Kitchen” classes.

 

Services available:

 

• Training teachers and parents in how to conduct kids cooking classes in an educational setting that will help to achieve curriculum outcomes. This includes providing resource materials and recipes. Leah is available to come to you or you can come to the Bangalow Cooking School site.

 

• Running hands on kids cooking classes and demos for group events, and television.

 

• Food writing for kids. Leah Roland is an experienced food writer and is currently writing a cook book that kids will be able to use with minimal adult supervision.

 

• Policy advisor.
